Jr Women Hockey Natls: Gangpur-Odisha bag bronze

Hockey Gangpur Odisha won the bronze medal in the 8th Hockey India Junior Women National Championship (Division-A), defeating Uttar Pradesh Hockey 2-1 in the 3rd/4th place match at Bhopal today. Hockey Gangpur-Odisha, in fact, bagged a double of sort as their junior men’s team also secured bronze.

Led by Jiwan Kishori Toppo, Hockey Gangpur-Odisha junior women played for the 3rd/4th place after losing to Hockey Jharkhand 0-2 in the semifinals. They reached the last-four stage, defeating Hockey Odisha 5-3 via shoot out in the quarterfinals.

Hockey Gangpur-Odisha booked place in the last-eight state, finishing second in Pool A, winning two matches, drawing and losing one each. They beat Hockey Chandigarh 6-3, Delhi Hockey 6-0, held Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy to 3-3 draw and went down to Mumbai Hockey Association 3-4.

On the other hand, Hockey Odisha qualified for the quarterfinals by winning all four of their league matches in Pool B. Led by Ajmina Kujur, Hockey Odisha beat Hockey Karnataka 2-1, Hockey Chhattisgarh 5-0, Hockey Haryana 2-1 and Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu 10-1.
